He arrived in Australia, Sydney, 18/10/1816 on the "Mariner" as a convict.
Date of Pardon : 4 Jun 1818.
Died in 1824 on passage to England.
From the colonial Secretarys Papers, fiche 3126, 4/1841 A No 179 p. 163, one can read the memorial of his wife Susannah.
From the Book "John Croaker, Convict Embezzler", we know that John Croaker was a clerk at the Isle of Thanet Bank in Margate. He was transported in Australia for embezzlement.
He was born in Kent in 1788 and became principal clerk at the local bank.
In 1808 he was apprenticed to a banker at Ramsgate.
For fiddling with the accounts, he got 14 years in Australia. His arrival coincided with the foundation of the bank o New South Wales, for which he set up its bookkeeping procedures. Later his interests turned to brewing, framing and malting. He died after a shipwreck on the coast of Chile.
