Willy was educated at the College of Preceptors in England, and later at Heidelburg University.
However he had a weak heart, and was advised to seek a warmer climate.
He emigrated to South Africa where he married Nora HAYNES and they had three children.
The family were not happy in South Africa, and in 1927 the whole family emigrated to New Zealand.
They eventually settled in the Dargaville area, and bought a small farm at Babylon.
Willy was the only one of his family to have children.
Willy died of heart failure at the age of 55.
Alfred married Nora Bertha HAYNES, daughter of Robert HAYNES and Mary SMERDON. (Nora Bertha HAYNES was born on 12 Mar 1883 in South Africa, died on 11 Nov 1958 in Whangarei New Zealand and was buried in Mt Wesley Lawn Cemetery, Dargaville New Zealand.)
